Deploying resilience.io to 200 demonstration regions in the next five years

Resilience Brokers are here…

With new ways of thinking and co-creating, driven by the power of collaboration and the networked strengths of an outstanding group of individuals and organisations, working towards a common goal: the rapid transition to resilient development paths in all regions of the world, to set them on track to achieving the Global Goals and `Paris Agreement targets.
Resilience Brokers will provide communities with the tools and support they need to become resilient and able to withstand all emerging global challenges, and a chance to look forward to a better future: a future built on equality, justice, dignity, respect and shared prosperity for all.

Resilience Brokers Programme

This ambitious initiative will see the introduction of resilient development paths in 200 city regions worldwide by 2022. The Programme is designed to foster innovative forms of cross-sector, multidisciplinary collaborations.

Underpinned by resilience.io, the Programme will connect developers, innovators and technology providers, with city stakeholder demand and local communities for collaborative risk- informed investment and policy decision making. And to support efficient infrastructure and technology design and procurement to realise cost savings of up to 40%.

The five year Programme will allow us to complete the final development phase of resilience.io; build capacity for the deployment of the technology within collaborative laboratories (collaboratories); and to support the delivery of projects with a focus on city resilience and inclusive, green growth transformation across the 200 target city regions.

Resilience Brokers will then release the technology open source to trigger a rapid scale up, to 70% of all city regions in the world by 2030. The introduction of resilient development paths at this scale will support the achievement of the Global Goals and improve the lives of more than five billion people.

The Ecological Sequestration Trust and Resilience Brokers

Resilience Brokers Ltd is a company wholly owned by the Ecological Sequestration Trust (the Trust). It has been set up with the purpose of managing the delivery of the Resilience Brokers Programme. The Resilience Brokers brand –now part of the family of brands which includes resilience.io– will be consistently implemented across all Programme related communications going forward. We would also like to take this opportunity to introduce the resilience.io brand refresh, consisting of a logo refresh and incorporation of a new colour palette. The aim is to achieve a strong visual alignment across the brands, to ensure maximum impact of the Programme’s communications.

An important call to action

Resilience Brokers have started their journey to help the world and we are inviting more experts and networks to join us. Over the next five years we aim to support at least one demonstration region in each country that signed up to the Global Goals. We are actively looking for city regions with big resilience challenges to become demonstrators for our Programme.

How to build resilience.io for sustainable urban energy and water systems

Dr Xiaonan Wang presents, How to build resilience.io for sustainable urban energy and water systems, an Energy Seminar for The Energy Futures Lab at Imperial College, London on 2nd December 2016.

Xiaonan explains the work so far in it’s strategic context and introduces new development to the platform since the debut of the prototype earlier in 2016. The platform has been extended from it’s WASH sector prototype to include components to allow it to model the energy mix in the GAMA region and has been used to evaluate a water purification technology for it’s viability. The prototype has been developed to a software beta version with a graphical user interface and app launcher.

My journey to provide and scale support to city regions to meet Global Goals by 2030

In 2008 I was working in Arup, heading up their global planning business with a world class team of transport, environmental, urban and policy and economics experts. Before that I had worked in infrastructure design and delivery, particularly Public Private Partnerships, around the World and I was also an adviser to the Mayor of London Ken Livingstone on his Sustainable Development Commission and so I was very aware of the challenges of achieving improved city resilience.

Moving from agreeing Global Frameworks and visionary Goals to changing the way we all live

By Peter Head, Founder and CEO The Ecological Sequestration Trust

I was in New York City for Climate Week and the UN General Assembly (UNGA) meeting on 25th September when the 17 Global Goals for 2030 were signed by 193 countries. It was a very moving and emotional week as well as a productive one and now I am back in London, there is a little time to reflect.

Blog ahead of Climate and SDG week in New York City

A Momentous Week

Five years ago I could see in the work of my brilliant planning team in Arup that human development needed to make a radical course correction. I called the destination the ‘Ecological Age’ and the process Sustainable Development. At that time, the Millenium Development Goal (MDG) of reducing extreme poverty was being approached quickly around the world, with China playing a major role with it’s incredible development programme. It was clear, however, that we were starting to breach the limits of the Earth to support this fast track change, with resource depletion, pollution and ecological destruction. The science suggested truly awful consequences of this path, as population grew to around 10bn by 2050, with climate change making it increasingly difficult to provide adequate supplies of food and water. I met a great number of young people around the world motivated to support change, but without the means to make it happen.
